Use the space bar or click the left mouse button to generate a new spiral.  Press the Z key to create a new connection (once you have enough spirals generated).

If you have a controller, you can use the south button (PS4 controller - cross, Xbox controller - A) to generate a new spiral, and you can use the north button (PS4 controller - triangle,  Xbox controller - Y) to create a connection.  Use the left and right triggers to move in and out, and the directional pads to move around.
